Keywords: Dairy cattle, prenatal foetal gender, ultrasonography

The objective of the present study was to describe the clinical use of ultrasonography for diagnosing and evaluating prenatal fetal sex in dairy cattle. For this purpose, 100 dairy pregnant cattle were used. The relative position of the genital tubercle (between 55–59 days after AI, n: 21) as well as the external genital structures (between 60–85. days after AI, n: 79) were ultrasonographic visualized for fetal gender determination. The results of determined prenatal ultrasonographic fetal genders were compared with the genders of the born calves. As a result, the accuracy rate of ultrasound was about 100% for detecting prenatal fetal gender. On the other hand, this study suggest the necessity of “ultrasonographical sexual pre-selection program” within the scope of dairy herd reproductive management in Turkey. Knowing of “calf gender” in pregnant cows will provide significant contribution to both the calving management and the breeder’s market and production goals. We believe that our innovating approach within the scope of dairy herd management should be taken into consideration for further evaluation both national and international level.
