This study was carried out on 120 equids which consisted of 67 horses, 20 mules and 33 donkeys around Kayseri between February and April 2001. During this period 10 ml of blood samples were collected from each animal and sera were separeted from those samples. The sera were tested using Sabin-Feldman dye test to detect antibodies against T.gondii and were also tested using Ooesbold absorbtion test to detect antibodies against L.monocytogenes.

Seven (10.44%) of the 67 horses, 2 (10.00%) of the 20 mules, 14 (42.42%) of the 33 donkeys and a total of 23 (19.16%) of the 120 equids were seropositive for T.gondii spesific antibodies. Titers of 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64 were found in 15 (65.21%), 4 (17.39%) and 4 (17.39%) of the 23 seropositive equids, respectively.

On the other hand, 27 (40.29%) of the 67 horses, 3 (15.00%) of the 20 mules, 10 (30.30%) of the 33 donkeys totally 40 (33.33%) of the 120 equids were seropositive for L.monocytogenes spesific antibodies. Titers of 1/50, 1/100, 1/200 and 1/400 were found in 15 (37.50%), 17 (42.50%), 5 (12.50%) and 3 (7.50%) of the 40 seropositive equids against L.monocytogenes. In addition 2 (2.98%) of the 67 horses, 4 (12.12%) of the 33 donkeys, totally 6 (5.00 %) of the 120 equids, were seropositive for both T.gondii and L.monocytogenes.

This is the first study which deals with the seroprevalence of listeriosis in equids in Turkey. Also this is the first study which explains the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in mules in Turkey and the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in equids around Kayseri.
