Retrospective Examination of Body Composition and Liver Enzymes Levels in Obese Women Aged 55–70

Objective: The 55–70 age range is defined as a period of life in which chronic diseases increase and physical activities decrease. It is reported that obesity caused by decreased physical activity gives rise to liver dysfunction and that its prevalence is higher in women and later ages. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between body composition values and liver enzyme activities in women aged 55–70.

Materials and Methods: Between January 2016 and December 2016, 33 control, 31 overweight and 35 obese, in total, 99 women aged 55–70, whose body composition measurements and liver enzymes levels were measured on the same day at Batman State Hospital Diet Policlinic, were examined retrospectively. Body composition values and blood parameter levels including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) of the subjects were evaluated.

Results: It was found that LDH activity values [20.0 (10.0–64.0) U/L] of the obese were significantly higher than those of control [10.0 (6.0–27.0) U/L]; GGT activity values of overweight [349.0 (328.0–440.5) U/L] and obese [374.5 (313–445.0) U/L] were found to be significantly higher than those of the control [310.0 (166.0–353.5) U/L]. A significant positive correlation was found between body mass index (BMI) fat weight LDH activity (r=0.523, P=0.010; r=0.531, P=0.009; respectively); BMI and GGT activity (r=0.525, P=0.025).

Conclusion: Considering the association of liver enzyme activity values with body composition and with the high levels of enzyme activities in obese and overweight women, it can be suggested that obesity may be a risk factor for liver diseases in women aged 55–70.
