Female Sexual Distress and Associated Factors During Pregnancy

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of female sexual distress during pregnancy and associated factors.

Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with 310 pregnant women in a hospital between March 2018 and June 2018. Data were collected by using questionnaire form prepared in accordance with the literature and Female Sexual Distress Scale.

Results: It was determined that the pregnant women included in the study had an average age of 28.30 ± 5.12 years in the 18-43 age range. 83.2% of the pregnant women stated that the frequency of sexual intercourse during pregnancy decreased, 80.0% reported decreased sexual desire during pregnancy, 71.9% did not find sexuality safe in pregnancy and 58.7% stated that they feared of sexuality during pregnancy. The rate of pregnant women who scored over ≥11.5 according to the cut-off point of the Female Sexual Distress Scale was 34.2%. A statistically significant relationship was found between age, education level, duration of marriage, number of pregnancies, decrease in sexual desire, fear of having sex in pregnancy and finding sexuality safe (P<0.05).

Coclusion: In line with the findings obtained from the study, it was determined that the sexuality and sexual intercourse frequency of women decreased and their sexuality was affected negatively during pregnancy.
