Intentional replantation is a treatment indicated for permanent teeth with compatible anatomy to allow atraumatic extraction, defined as the deliberate extraction of the tooth and its placement back into its original position within the extraction socket after endodontic manipulation. Intentional replantation can be performed after failed root canal treatment and apical microsurgery, or when root damage cannot be accessed or repaired intraorally, such as cervical root resorption. Intentional replantation is also indicated in the cases of iatrogenic damage or other anatomical obstacles (e.g. root canal obliteration, overfilled canals, proximity of anatomical structures such as the mental nerve) and in teeth that are contraindicated for apical microsurgery.
