This study was designed to evaluate the effect of anesthetic methods and type of surgery on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in pediatric age group.

Our study was performed on ASA I class patients aged between 4-10 years undergoing elective surgery. Anesthesia was induced by 5% sevoflurane. In group I (n=40), sevoflurane 1% was used for maintenance. Group I was again divided into two groups as group Ia; undergoing tonsillectomy and group Ib; undergoing inguinal hernioraphy. Group II (n=40), sevoflurane 2% was used for maintenance. Similarly, group II was divided into two groups as group Ia and IIb undergoing tonsillectomy and inguinal herniorraphy, respectively. The patients were observed for the incidence of PONV for 24 hours period.

PONV was observed in 5 children in group Ia, in 1 child in group Ib, (p<0,05) in first 6 hours of postoperative period. PONV was observed in 7 and 2 children in group IIa and IIb, respectively (p<0,05) in first 6 hours of postoperative period. There was no statistically significant difference between two groups at other intervals.

In conclusion; The incidence of PONV was less in children who underwent inguinal hernia repair and the incedence of PONV was decreased by use sevoflurane 1%.
