Investigation of the Correlation between the Physical Activity Level and Health Problems in University Educational Staff

The aim of this study was to determine physical activity levels of university educational staff and to determine whether any correlation is present between the physical activity levels and health problems. The study was carried out on 232 university educational staff aged between 28-64 (mean = 45.51±6.79), selected by random sampling method from whose works in University of Firat in Elazig. Data were obtained using questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to all subjects, and they were asked to fill out them and the questionnaire was returned 5 days after. The data were statistically evaluated using the chi-square test by the use of SPSS program. The level of significance was accepted as <0.05.

Based on the weakly activity habits of university teachers, the most frequently performed physical activities were walking (48.3%), repairing and gardening (28.9%), physical fitness exercise-aerobics and stepping (21.1%). It was determined that the physical activity level of university educational staff were very low walking being the most frequently attended physically activity by 48% and about 51.7-95.7% of the university educational staff did not performed any physical activity. The associate professors were among the university educational staff who were most interested and participated in physical activities (p<0.05). Reported health problems of university educational staff were flu symptoms (45.7%), headache-general aches and pains and weakness (43.9%), muscle, joint or bone problems (37.3%), gastrointestinal system problems (18.5%). Data from reported health problems showed that the professors had the least health problems. When the educational staffs were compared with respect to the physical activity level, those did not perform physical activity had significantly more health problems (by 81.25-84.00) compared to those performed regular physical activities (p<0.05).

As a result, it was concluded that physical activity levels of university educational staff were poor, and physically inactive subjects were much more suffered from health problems (>80%) and to be under risk of occupational disorders and other health problems due to on lack of physical activity.
