In this article, information related to classification and embriologic development of long crowned (hypsodont) equine teeth was reviewed. A particular attention was paid to the factors playing roles on the shape of the tooth, microscopic events occurring during dentogenesis and, development and differentiation of embriologic tissues and cells forming dental structures. The role of interactive reactions between ameloblasts and odontoblasts regarding the initiation of dentogenesis and calcification stages of dentine and enamel have been evaluated. Additionally, the theories regarding eruption proceses of a tooth following the completion of its embriologic development have been reviewed.
