The Evaluation of Complicated Occupational Accidents Admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department of Erciyes University Hospital

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the affecting demographic, environmental and factors of occupational accidents by evaluating the patients admitted to the emergency service of Erciyes University Hospital.

Material and Metod: The descriptive study was carried on patients applied to Emergency Service between October 1-December 31 2000. Data were collected from 51 cases by face to face interviews.

Result: The mean age of the cases was 28.6±10.4 y. The majority of the cases were male and between the age group of 25-34. The most of the cases were under coverage of SSK health insurance. Occupational accidents are mostly common in people working in machine productery and repairing and wood work.

The accidents usually occured on Tuesdays and in afternoon and evening hours. The most affected body parts were the upper extremities. Of all the accidents, 36.0% of them were resulted amputation. The rate of hospitalization was 15.7% and permanent disability rate was 21.7%. The mean labor loss was 15.5±12.3 days.

Conclusion: As a result; it has found that occupational accidents were occured more often in lower income groups and resulted with finger amputations. It is suggested that to prevent these accidents, people should be given health education and covered by health insurance.
