Obesity is a serious and chronic disease state that is on the rise in recent years. This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of obesity on a specific group that are the police officers. In this descriptive-sectional study; weights and heights of 199 police officers admitting to Elazığ Security Department Outpatient Office were measured, and a questionnaire with some definitive questions were performed. Obesity was assessed based on the body mass index (BMI). BMI ≥30 kg/m2 are defined as obese, BMI= 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 overweight, BMI=18.5-24.9 kg/m2 normal, and BMI<18.5 kg/m2 underweight. Of the police officers included in the study, 15.6% of them were female, 84.4% of them were male with a mean age of 33.1±5.8, and a mean time in the profession of 9.7±3.7 years. Calculated mean body weight was 80.6±11.6 kg, mean height was 175.1±5.5 cm, and mean BMI was 26.1±3.4 kg/m2. Of those recruited in the study, 13.1% were obese, and all the obese individuals were male. 51.8% of the police officers were overweight. 54.8% of male, and 35.5% of female were overweight (p<0.05). Mean BMI was higher of the male who spent more than 5 years in the profession and who were older than 30 (p<0.05). The police officers included in the study had high percentages of increased body weight and obesity. Despite the fact that this small sample group can not reflect the condition of all the police officers, it is of alarming nature for a specific professional group. This active professionally group, especially male police officers should be offered training programmes for obesity and treatment when necessary.
