Determination the Effects of Basketball Training to the Physical Fitness of People with Mental Disabilities

The aim of this study was to determinate the effects of basketball training on the physical fitness of people with mental disability. Basketball training programs aimed to achieve improvement on their physical and movement skills and to create the soul of team among mentally challenged people.

Total 30 trainable male individuals with mental disability attending to the school in Metin Sabancı Spastic Children Centre whom were between 18–25 years (15 experimental–15 control groups) were chosen randomly into this study. Individuals in the experimental group were applied basketball training (Special Olympics Games) as twice in a week for 70 minutes each, totally for three month, on their physical fitness and anthropometric characteristics. The control group also was assessed according to the same program as pretest and posttest.

Special Olimpics Games Basketball Skills Assesment Test and Brockport Test Procedures for adapted children were used for both groups.

To analyse the statistical datas, Wilcoxon paired two test was used to compare the results of the pre-test and post-test of groups. Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the differences of groups in the level of p<0,05 and p<0,01.

In conclusion, it was shown that basketball training can be proposed as an effective tools for trainable mentally disabled individuals to provide improvement on their physical and movement skills.
