The Sociodemographic Characteristics and Working Conditions of the Cleaning Workers and The Prevalence of Occupational Accidents and Diseases

The aim of this study is to determine the sociodemographic characteristics, working conditions and the prevalence’s of occupational accidents and diseases.

The study population of the research conducted between May-July 2005 in Ankara included all the cleaning workers working in three Central districts (Çankaya, Mamak, Yenimahalle). At the time of the study, 820 workers have been working in those districts, with a confidence of 95% and 5% deviation, it has been estimated to include 262 workers to the study. By using simple random sampling method, the subjects have been chosen using the random numbers tables.

The 52.8% of the workers reported that there was not a workplace health unit in their workplace; 57.9% reported that there was not workplace nurse/health technician. The 83.0% reported that they had a baseline examination at the beginning of working, 47.4% are being exanimate periodically. 85.2% did not take any occupational education related to his occupation, 87.4% did not take occupational health and safety education. 80.1% don’t use personnel protector. 26.6% of the workers had an occupational accident. 5.3% had have persistent disability due to an occupational accident. 9.6% of the subjects had have an occupational diseases diagnose, 4.8% had have a persistent disability due to an occupational diseases.

The result shows that the cleaning workers are not benefiting enough from occupational health care. We thought that the occupational disease and exposure to occupational hazards among one third of the subjects is a consequence of this state.
