Keywords: Quail, egg weight, hatching weight, shape index, plumage color

This study was carried out to determine egg weight, shape index, hatching weight, and relationships among these traits in japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with different colored plumages.

In this study, 421 eggs and 332 chicks which hatched these eggs were used.

Average egg weights were similar in sprinkled with gray and brown plumage color group while the lightest egg weights were obtained from white plumage color (P<0.001). Averages of egg shape index among different plumage color groups were not statistically different (P>0.05).

The lowest average chick weight was determined in the white group. On the other hand the highest average chick weight was determined in the brown group (P<0.001).

There was a high ratio of correlation (r=0.902) between the weights of hatched chicks and eggs (P<0.001). However, there was no correlation between the shape index and the other traits (P>0.05).
