The Impact on Menopausal Symptoms of Marital Adjustment and Attitude Toward Menopausal of Married Women in The Climacteric Period

To determine the impact on menopausal symptoms of marital adjustment and attitude toward menopausal of married women in the climacteric period.

This study was conducted at Celal Bayar Univ. Manisa School of Health and Medical School of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department after receiving permission from the local ethics committee. The research population was comprised of 1346 women who presented to CBU Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic with menopausal complaints between September 1, 2004 and September 30, 2005. The research sample was chosen cross-sectional study included women who presented to the clinic with menopausal symptoms 3 month periods between November 1, 2005 and January 31, 2006. Some of these women did not agree to participate in the research and the remaining 226 women were included in the study. For data collection a 40-question survey was developed by the researcher, the Menopause Symptoms Evaluation Survey, Marital Adjustment Scale, and Attitude Toward Menopausal were used.

It was determined that 41.6% of the women had some information about menopause, 27.4% stated that menopausal symptoms had a negative effect on their relationship with their husbands, 20.6% used a medication or herb for menopausal symptoms, and 40.3% wanted to share with their spouse about their menopausal complaints. As the women's marital adjustment (mean: 41.2±9.7) and attitude toward menopausal score (mean: 41.5±12.5) decreased their menopausal symptoms (mean: 18.0±8.7) score also increased.

The conclusion was reached that menopausal symptoms of women in the climacteric period were positively affected by marital adjustment and attitude toward menapousal.
