Keywords: Benzo (a) pyrene, Vitamin E, Selenium, Lipid peroxidation, Antioxidant enzymes

The effects of vitamin E and selenium on blood and tissues lipid peroxidation and some antioxidant enzymes levels in rats exposed to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) was investigated. For this purpose, 100 Wistar Albino female rats were divided in 5 groups, as group 1 (Control), group 2 (BaP), group 3 (BaP + vitamin E), group 4 (BaP + selenium), and group 5 (BaP + vitamin E + selenium). The results of the present study showed that administration of BaP caused an increase in the levels of plasma and liver lipid peroxidation and a decrease in the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the erythrocyte and liver. On the other hand, the administration of vitamin E and selenium decreased the levels of plasma and liver MDA, while increasing the levels of erythrocyte and liver GSH, GSH-Px and catalase. As a result, vitamin E and selenium administrations were useful in preventing the negative effects of BaP on the lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes and its carcinogenic effects. Furthermore, vitamin E combined with selenium was more effective.
