Cystic Echinococcosis Cases in Firat University Hospital Between 2005 and 2007

In this study, it was aimed to examine the status of cystic echinococcosis in Firat University Hospital, between 2005 and 2007 years. The records of 84 patients (46 male and 38 females) who applied to Firat University Hospital surgery clinics, including general (62 cases), pediatric (12 cases) and chest (10 cases), between 01. 01. 2005 and 31. 12. 2007, were retrospectively examined. Fifty one patients were from Elazığ, and also 14 from Bingöl, 9 from Tunceli, 8 from Muş 1 from Diyarbakır and 1 from other. Sixty-two patients were living in city center, 18 patients were living in town center and 4 patients were living in villages. The liver (67 patients) and the lungs (13 patients) were two most common locations place for the cystic echinococcosis. In addition, it was also observed that patient with liver (67 patients), lung (13 patients) and liver+lung+surrenal concomitance (1 patient) and patient with spleen location (1 patient). Of the treated cysts, 81 cases were evaluated as primary and 3 as secondary cysts. There was no requirement for serological test in 33 patients. However, one or more radiological tests were applied in all cases. Partial cystectomy and cystectomy were the mainly applied surgical treatment for the cases. The incidences of cystic echinococcosis were found to be 2-4/100.000 in our study performed between 2005 and 2007. These results point out that cystic echinococcosis is still an important health problem in Elazig region.
