An Evaluation of Hygiene Behaviors of Cleaning Personnel at a University Hospital

This study was carried out at a university hospital to evaluate hygiene behaviors of cleaning personnel. This is a descriptive study. Among a total of 125 cleaning personnel working in Fırat University Hospital, Elazığ, Turkey, 112 volunteered were included in the study. A questionnaire form which was prepared based on the literature was administered to participants through face-to-face interviews. Of the participants, 35.7% were females, 64.3% were males. Average age of the participants was 38.09±6.47. Of the cleaning personnel, 56.3% reported that they did not receive any training on hospital cleaning and related rules before starting to work; while 20.5% reported that they did not receive any training on hospital cleaning and related rules after starting to work. A total of 10.7% did not receive any training. In the study group, it was reported that they received training mostly on general cleaning and the use of cleaning substances (87.5%). Of the participants, 43.8% reported that they received training on hygiene rules and contagious diseases. All of the participants (100%) reported that they wore gloves; 11.6% reported that they wore bonnet/caps; 8.9%reported that they wore masks while working. Of the participants 18.8% reported that they were vaccinated as prevention from the working environment. Consenguently; Regarding the works performed by the cleaning personnel, it was found that they lacked training about the measures to be taken before and after working. Only a law ratio of the participants used preventive materials or preventive vaccines.
