HBsAg Seroprevalance in Pregnant Women Admitted to a Hospital in Centrum of Elazig

Objective: Because of the high levels of infection rate in babies who were born from HBsAg positive mothers and being intermediate endemic area for hepatitis B, We searched the rate of HBsAg positivity in pregnant women admitted to our hospital.

Material and Methods: In our study, we retrospectively searched the rate of HBsAg positivity in pregnant women between Jan 1 – Dec 31 2010 .We assessed the levels of hepatitis B surface Ag in of serums using ELISA method. We used SPSS 12.0 for statistical anlysis.

Results: The mean age was 23.52+5.32 and the age ranged between16-48 years old. Of the patients, 5021 were negative for HBsAg whereas, 99 were HBsHg positive. Overall 1.9% of patients had HBsAg positivity.

Conclusions: Monitorising HBsAg positive mothers during their pregnancy in order to take care of their babies and increasing the awareness education and attention is important. As a result of this, the rate of HBsAg positivity and its consequenses will be decreased in our country.
