Elazig Kovancılar State Hospital, Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Patients Presenting to the Evaluation of Cervical Smear Results

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the cervical smear results of patients who admitted to Obstetric and Gyneocology clinic because of various complaints.

Materials and methods: The cervical smear of patients who presented to Elazığ Kovancılar State Hospital between June 2010 and December 2011 were examined retrospectively. Gynecologic and obstetric history as well as age, number of parity, abortus, curettage, age of first coitus and menopausal status were recorded. Patients are divided into two groups as premenopausal and postmenopausal.

Results: In this period, 795 patients were recorded. 748 (94.08%) patients were in premenopausal period, 47 (5.91%) were in postmenopausal period. Chronic cervitis was present in 749 (94.2%) of patients. Atrophic cervitis was determined in 9 (1.1%), ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) were determined in 15 (1.9%) and AGUS (atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance) was determined in 4 (0.5%). High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) was found in one patient (0.1%), whereas 6 (0.8%) patients had low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL). The specimens were considered to be insufficient in 11 (1.4%) cases due to intense inflammation and bleeding. Invasive cervical carcinoma or cervical polyp was not determined in any of the specimens,.

Conclusion: Pap-smear is an important screening tool in diagnosis of cervical pathologies.
