Keywords: Proteinuria, hematuria, renal insufficiency, biopsy, glomerulonephritis

Objective: Kidney biopsy is the most definitive diagnostic and prognostic approach in adults with renal parenchymal disease despite being an invasive intervention.

Material and Methods: A retrospective clinical study was performed according to medical registries of 99 patients who had undergone ultrasound assisted percutaneous kidney biopsy from 2008 to 2011 at University of Firat School of Medicine Clinic of Nephrology.

Results: Indications for ultrasound assisted percutaneous kidney biopsy were proteinuria in 48 cases (48.5%), haematuria in 27 (27.3%) and renal insufficiency in 24 (24.2%). The most frequent kidney diseases that were detected by ultrasound assisted percutaneous kidney biopsy were membranous nephropathy (MN) in 20 cases (20.2%), Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in 16 cases (16.2%), Immunuglobulin A nephropathy (IGAN) in 12 cases (12.2%), Minimal change disease (MCD) in 7 cases (7.1%) and Amyloidosis in 6 cases (6.1%).

Conclusion: The most common indication for ultrasound assisted percutaneous kidney biopsy in our centre was proteinuria. Membranous nephropathy was the most common cause of primary, and amyloidosis was the most common cause of secondary glomerulonephritis. Since it has many contributions to diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of renal diseases, ultrasound assisted percutaneous kidney biopsy is considered to be relatively safe, reliable and uncomplicated evaluation modality in this field.
