Determination of Some Health Behaviors of Special Education Teachers

Objectives: The research was performed to determine some health behaviors of teachers who are working in special education institutions.

Material and Methods: The population of the cross-sectional study was created by 252 teachers who are working in sprecial education institutions in two city centers of East Anatolia Region. The whole population was included into the research without sample selection and the research was completed with 225 (%89.3) teachers. Datas were collected between the dates January and February 2012 by using a questionnaire questioning socio-demographic characteristics and health behaviors. Numbers, percentages and averages were used

Results: 58.6% of teachers were in the age group of 25-36, 47.1% were female, 68.9% were married, 24.4 % graduated from special education program. It was determined that 36.4% of teachers smoke, 24.0% drink alcohol in variable frequency, 8.9%exercise regularly, 60.0% have an adequate and balanced diet, 95.1% experience work stress, 76.0% don't have health control regularly. Average age to start smoking between teachers with smoking habits is 19.8±3.77.

Conclusions: Health education programs in health behaviors in which teachers are inadequate and premises regulations to reduce the work stress may be recommended.
