Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants which have received great attention due to potential to accumulate in living organisms, their toxic effects and durability. PBDEs are similar to Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) structurally consisting of two halogenated aromatic rings and other polyhalogenated compounds. Risks of these chemicals on health attracted attention with an extensive review, and it was observed that levels of these chemicals found in home environments reduced the fertility in humans. In addition, it is known that PBDEs cause a number of problems including cancer, thyroid problems, and neurodevelopmental effects. Industrial production of some PBDEs was restricted in Stockholm Congress with the agreement for the control of major persistent organic pollutants (POP) and gradual stopping due to toxicity and durability of these substances.
