In order to investigate correlations between p53 expression, AgNOR staining, and conventional clinic and histopatological parameters in breast tumors, 40 cases, of which mastectomies had been performed for breast cancer were analyzed. Sections obtained from these cases were evaluated for major histopathological parameters, and immunohistochemical staining for p53, and histochemical staining for AgNOR were done.

In these cases, %40 were positive for p53 and mean AgNOR value was 7.76±2.85. While there was a significant correlation between p53 expression and mean AgNOR values (p<0.05), we couldn't find any significant correlation with other parameters There was a significant correlation for mean AgNOR values between invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas (p<0.01); the correlations between AgNOR values, and microscopic grade (I-II=p<0.05, I-III=p<0.0 I, II-III=p<0.0 1), elastosis (p<0.05), peritumoral infiamatory cell infiltration (p<0.01) and necrosis (p<0.001) were also significant.

In our study, while p53 positivity tended to be associated with worse tumor charactheristics we couldn't find any statistically significant correlation. Role of AgNOR to show good and bad tumor caharactheristics was succesful. In conclusion, we can say that p53, and AgNOR when combined with other clinical and histopathological tumor parameters, they will help determination of prognosis in patients with primary breast tumors.
