The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Pomegranate juice (PJ) on antioxidant activity in liver and testis tissues of healthy rats.
In this study, 28 adult Wistar albino rats were used. Rats were divided into four groups; each group containing 7 rats. These groups were named as control, low, middle and high. One mL distilled water, 0.25 mL PJ plus 0.75 mL distilled water, 0.50 mL PJ plus 0.50 mL distilled water and 1 mL PJ were given by gavage to rats in the control, low, middle and high group, respectively daily for 7 weeks. The rats were sacrificed at the end of treatment period. Lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activities were investigated in liver and testis tissues. A significant decrease were observed in lipid peroxidation (MDA) level and marked increases in glutathione (GSH) level, glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activities of rats received different doses of PJ in comparison to the control group. In conclusion, pomegranate juice consumption decreases the lipid peroxidation, but increases the antioxidant activity in liver and testis tissues of rats. The results suggest that PJ may have a potential antioxidant activity. |
