The aim of this study was to investigate the role of age dependent changes of hand function according to gender. Sixty-seven elderly and 70 university students were included in this study. Age, gender, hand dominance, total education year and leisure activities of participants were recorded. Jebsen Hand Function Test was used for testing dexterity. The mean test scores of hand function were compared by independent-t- test in both young and elderly persons. The mean (SD) age of the elderly subjects was 72,61±6,69 and 21,25±1,43 years in young subjects. Forty-three (64%) of elderly and 45 (64%) of young persons were women. A significant difference was found between elderly and young subjects with respect to dexterity. Dexterity of women in both age groups were better than dexterity of men. The speed of writing was significantly better in young women and elderly men compared to others. Dexterity is significantly decreased with aging. Considering our data we can conclude that women have better dexterity than men in several working areas which require manual dexterity and we observed that elderly women do not efficiently write in their daily life.
