This study aimed to investigate the effects of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) used as bone healing accelerator in experimental bone defects.

In the study, 12 New Zealand rabbits were used. The defects, upper proximal metaphysis of both tibia of each rabbits were created. Twelve of twenty-four defects performed were left empty to serve as the control group and the remaining defects were filled with PRF. Clinical and radiographic examinations, immediately and the 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th days after the operation were performed. Postoperative 30th and 60th days, rabbits were sacrificed and histopathological examinations were performed.

Radiological and histological examinations showed that the bone healing in PRF defects was better than other.

As a result, PRF was observed to considerably improve early bone healing, and it was suggested that it can readily be used as a good graft material.
