This study was performed to investigate T.gondii specific antibodies in prey birds such as buzzard (Buteo rufinus), eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), falcon (Falco tinnunculus), owl (Bubo bubo), sparrow hawk (Accipiter gentilis), and heron (Botaurus stellaris) using Sabin-Feldman dye test between May 1997 and April 2001. During this period, blood samples were collected from a total of 44 prey birds which consisted of 10 buzzards, 7 eagles, 9 falcons, 8 owls, 9 sparrow hawks, and 1 heron. Then the sera were separated by centrifugation at 4000 r.p.m. for 10 minutes to test for T.gondii specific antibodies using Sabin-Feldman dye test. No T.gondii specific antibodies were found in the eagles, and the heron while the antibodies were detected in 1 (10.00%) of the buzzards, 1 (11.11%) of the falcons, 1 (12.50%) of the owls, 1 (11.11%) of the sparrow hawks. Four (9.09%) out of 44 birds were seropositive for T.gondii specific antibodies at 1/16 dilution titer.

This is the first serological study which was carried out on prey birds to detect antibodies against T.gondii.in Turkey.
