Evaluation of the Clinical, Radiographic, and Ultrasonographic Findings in Umbilical Lesions in Calves

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and ultrasonographic findings of umbilical lesions in calves that cause significant economic losses.

In the present study, a total of 178 cases in different race, age and gender, and that were detected to have hernia umbilicalis, omphalitis, omphalophlebitis, omphaloarteritis and urachal fistula were evaluated.

After clinical examination was completed the calves were inspected with 5.0-7.0 MHz probe for ultrasonographic evaluation while the animals were standing or laying down on the side. Then, direct and positive contrast radiography of the patients were taken.

It was concluded that evaluation of clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic findings together to detect umbilical lesions that occur in calves is of importance in point of giving direction to the treatment and prognosis.
