Botulinum toxin, the most potent biological toxin, which can be used both for therapeutic as well as for cosmetic purposes in several medical conditions and diseases over the last 30 years. Although its use has been popular in the field of cosmetic treatment in the recent years, it has also been used by a number of disorders thought to be caused by excess contraction of the muscles. In the orofacial region; botulinum toxin has become one of the treatment options in the treatment of many diseases associated with muscles such as temporomandibular joint and salivary gland disorders. For this reason, this review discusses through the latest literature the historical development structure, the mechanism of action, toxicity, indications, contraindications and side effects of the agent.
