Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Children with Rotavirus and Adenovirus Gastroenteritis: An 8-Year Single Center Experience

Objective: Gastroenteritis caused by viruses in children is an universal problem. In our study, we aimed to evaluate these pathogens epidemiologically in order to understand the role of rotavirus and adenoviruses in children with acute gastroenteritis (AGE).

Materials and Methods: A total of 4607 cases with AGE that had stool examination were included into study between July 2010 and January 2018. The data of 486 patients who were found positive for rotavirus or adenovirus antigen test in feces were evaluated from the medical records.

Results: The prevalence of rotavirus and adenovirus was 9.3% and 1.2%, respectively. The number of patients with rotavirus and adenovirus was 430 (88.5%) and 56 (11.5%), respectively. The gender distribution of the patients (K/E) for rotavirus and adenoviruses were 21/35 and 201/229 respectively. The median age of the patients was 14 (1–153) months. Rotavirus infections were most frequently seen in 8-14 months of age and adenovirus infections were most frequently seen in 6-7 months of age. Rotavirus infections were common in October, November and December; adenovirus infections were are common in August, November and December. The main complaints were diarrhea, vomiting, fever, seizure and abdominal pain. 318 patients were hospitalized because of dehydration. The mean length of hospitalisation was 5.11±3.15 days and there was no significant difference between these infections (P=0.570).

Conclusion: It is important to inform families about rotavirus vaccination because it is more prevalent in patients with AGE in our region. In addition, multicentre prospective studies with large series are needed to add rotavirus vaccine to our national vaccination program.
