Traditional Methods Applied to the Women Who Voluntarily Applied for Ending their Pregnancy at Family Planning Polyclinic of the Elazığ State Hospital and their Fertility Characteristics

In this study, the fertility features of the women applied for abortion, to the Famıly Plannıng Polyclınıc of the Elazığ State Hospıtal were investigated. The methods which those women had used apart from intervened abortion were also surveyed. 196 women applied for abortion were interviewed by using face-to-face method between September and December in 2000.

Seventy-Eight women (42.2%) were in the group of 35 years old and older. 136 women (69.4%) was living in the city center. The average of total pregnancy number of the women involved in the survey was 5.34 ± 2.39; the number of alive birth was 3.23 ± 1.55; the number of abortion was 2.02±1.48; the number of intervened abortion was 1.73 ± 1.19, respectively.

In the volunteered abortion applicant group 54.1 % was mentioned that they heard some traditional method for ending pregnancy from their neighbours or relatives. Moreover approximately 25.5 % of them reported that they had tried one of these above mentioned methods.

In general we can say that the women who came from city center preferred volunteered abortion.
