Keywords: Arcobacter butzleri, phage, environmental samples

In this study, the presence lytic phages specific to Arcobacter butzleri was investigated in environmental samples by using double layer agar method. In two of the 800 field samples examined, melts indicating the presence of visible phage were detected at the initial isolation. Each of the agar with melts was cut and transferred to Tryptic Soy Broth broths. In many subsequent analyzes to amplify the isolated phages, it was found that the two initially dissolving phages did not dissolve and did not form plaques. The same assays were tested in seven A. butzleri field strains isolated from different poultry species. However, no positive result was obtained. In conclusion, although there were important clues about the presence of lytic-effect phages specific to A. butzleri in the collected environmental samples, no definite data could be obtained. Considering the possibility of isolated phages to be prophage, further studies focusing on this subject are required.
