The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Listeria spp. in fresh white cheese, skin-cheese, butter and skimmed-cheese produced in Elazığ and the surrounding towns. A total number of 163 samples; 51 of which were fresh Şavak-style white cheese, 52 skin-cheese, 50 butter and 10 skimmed-cheese, were collected from retailers in Elazığ. In the cultural examination of these samples, L. monocytogenes and L. innocua were isolated from one fresh white cheese and one salted-butter, respectively, but no other species of Listeria were found in the milk products. This is the first study that reports Listeria spp. isolation in butter in Turkey, as far as the authors are aware. These results suggest that Listeria species are not common either in the milk of animals or the environment in our region. However further work needs to be conducted in order to prove this.
