This study was carried out on the chickens in Elazığ and its four districts (Baskil, Keban, Kovancılar, Sivrice) during April 1995-April 1996. A total of 50 chickens were examined monthly in terms of lice from five localities during a year.

Louse collected from chickens were placed in 70% ethyle alcohol and brought to the laboratory and transferred into a universal tube containing chloral hydrate solution for clearing. Later, the specimens were mounted on slides using canada balsam for microscopic examination.

A total of 600 chickens were examined and 339 of them (56.50%) found to be infested with one or more species of lice. The species found on the infested chickens were Menacanthus stramineus (45.13%), M.cornutus (30.09%), Menapon gallinae (24.19%), Goniocotes gallinae (12.99%), Goniodes dissimilis (0.88%) and Lipeurus caponis (0.88%).

Infestation rates for each month were detected and the highest levels were found in December (76%), May (64%) and April (62%). The lowest level of infestation rate was seen in july (42%). A total of 3265 louse were collected from infested chickens. Average number of louse for each infested chickens were found to vary from 4.44 to 14.29 by month.
