This study was conducted to determine the normal conjunctival flora in subjects living in Elazig and also determine the age, sex and seasonal changes in this flora. Samples were taken in January-February and July-August (2001) periods and eye flora of total of 480 subjects (240 male, 240 female) who had no systemic disease or ocular problem except refraction abnormality were investigated. Ventral conjunctival fornix of the eye was cultured with sterile swabs the subject was looking up. The samples were cultured for screenig of bacteria and fungus. Isolated microorganisms were identified using conventional methods. There was growth in 121 (25.2%) of the samples. Microorganisms were isolated from 62.8% samples from males and 37.2% of those obtained from females. Growth of bacteria was present in 19.6% of the samples obtained in January-February period while 30.8% of the samples obtained in July-August period had growth in culture. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequently (65.3%) isolated microorganism. Diphteroid bacil (8.3%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (7.4%), Neisseria spp. (5.0%), Pseudomonas spp. (4.1%) and Staphylococcus aureus (%3.3) were the other most frequnetly isolated organisms, respectively. In conclusion, because normal eye flora changes frequently depending on several factors, continous screening of normal eye flora is of importance with respect to the evaluation and determination of etiology of possible eye infections.
