Keywords: Infertility, mtDNA deletions, Varicocele

The most common cause of male infertility is varicocele. In the present study we aimed to investigate the mitochondrial deletions in the control fertil group compare to the oligoasthenospermic infertil patients with varicocele and without varicocele according to their 7345 bp and 7599 bp deletions in the mitochondrial DNA.

Twenty oligoasthenospermic patients with varicocele (V+),20 oligoasthenospermic patients without varicocele (V-) and 20 normospermic controls are included to the study. The DNA isolation is performed by using ejaculate samples.Primary shift polymerase chain reaction method is performed in order to detect the 7345 bp and 7599 bp deletions.

After comparison of 7345bp and 7599bp deletions a significant difference was revealed between the oligoasthenospermia group with varicocele and the control group (p=0,009 and p=0,019). Also, a significant difference was shown after comparison of 7345bp and 7599bp deletion between the oligoasthenospermia group without varicocele and the control group (p=0,011 and p=0,009). The comparison of 7345bp and 7599bp deletions between the oligoasthenospermia groups with and without varicocele showed a significant difference, too (p=0,02 and p=0,042).

In our study it was shown that mtDNA deletions are more common especially in the oligoasthenospermia group without varicocele. After comparing the infertile

oligoasthenospermia group with the control, it was shown that deletions were more commonly detected in the infertile varicocele group than the control group.
