The aim of the present study was to determine serum phosphorus levels of cows with primary ketosis.

Eleven cows with primary ketosis (ketosis group) and seven healthy cows (control group) were used in the study. The blood samples were taken from v. jugularis of the cows and serum phosphorus levels were determined. Mean serum phosphorus levels of ketosis and control group were determined as 3.90 ± 0.86 mg/dl and 6.02 ± 0.25 mg/dl, respectively. The mean serum phosphorus level of the ketosis group were statistically lower than that of the control group (p<0.001).

In conclusion, we suggest that cows with primary ketosis should be investigated with respect to hypophosphatemia.
