Macrosomic infants create a great problem due to increased risk of traumatic birth and related complications. In our study, we investigated birth trauma and related complications of macrosomic infants of mothers who had neither gestational nor pregestational diabetes.

We evaluated the clinical, laboratory and echocardiographic features of 50 infants of nondiabetic mother, 72% of whom were male, 28% of whom were female, birth weight of whom excess than 4000 grams, hospitalized in our neonatal care unit in 2 years period.

Birth weights of 34 (68%) infants were 4000-4499 grams, 12 (24%) infants 4500-4999 grams, 4 (8%) infants 5000 grams and above. We detected various degrees of asphxia findings in 18 (36%) patients, traumatic birth findings in 7 (14%), transient tachypnea of the newborn in 2 (4%), hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy in 19 (38%), hypoglycemia in 7 (14%) and polycytemia in 2 (4%). Cardiac pathologies were determined in 8 (16%) patients. One of the infants was diagnosed as nesidioblastosis by the age of 2 months. Two (4%) infants died from asphyxia.

Traumatic birth and its related complications are the major determinants of the clinical and prognostic outcomes of macrosomic infants of nondiabetic mothers.
