Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of the death overall. Hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia are the independent risk factors for coroner heart diseases. Increased triglyseride levels and decreased HDL levels are the characteristic dyslipidemias in type 2 DM patients. ADA advised LDL levels to be 100 mg/dl and less in diabetic patients. In this study we aimed to investigate the serum lipid levels in diabetic patients and how successful we are in our treatment target.

Type 2 DM patients visiting Firat Universty. Endocrinology clinic for regular controls include in this study. The patients were divided in the groups according to their rutin biochemical levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and HDL cholesterol in respect of NCEP ATP III criterias.

Total 276 patients, (102 male,174 female) were emrolled in this study. The mean diabetic ages of patients was 8.4±6.3 years and HbA1c levels was %9.2±2.3. The mean levels of total cholesterol was: 217.4±46.4 mg/dl, LDL cholesterol: 147.1±36.7 mg/dl, Triglyceride: 216.6±16.6 mg/dl, HDL cholesterol: 45.3±9.4 mg/dl. According to NCEP ATP III criterias, the LDL levels were optimum in 24 patients (%8.7), acceptable in 67 patients (%24.3), borderline in 86 patients (%31.2), high in 65 patients (%23.6) and very high in 34 patients (%12.3). Statin group of antilipidemic drugs were prescribed to %84.9 of patients who were taking medical treatment for hyperlipidemia.

It was found that serum lipid levels were not in optimal range in diabetic patients and only %8.7 of patients were treated optimally.
