The Investigation of Dioxins and Dioxins Like Compounds Levels in Butter, Consumed in Elazig Region

Dioxins and dioxin like compounds find stable in earth and are extremely toxic environmental pollutants in term of human and animal healthy. In the present study, it was aimed to determine the level of these compounds in butter. These compounds have many toxic effects such as cancer. For this purpose, 20 butter samples collected at Elazig region were examined to determine the levels of TCDD, PeCDD, HxCDD, OCDD from dioxin compounds, TCDF, PeCDF, HXCDF from furan derivatives and (PCB), TCB, HpCB from policloridebifeniles. The levels of compounds were determined using the methods 1613 and 8290 given in USEPA by using Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). The toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations of dioxins and dioxin like compounds in butter was found 0,0138 ng TEQ/g lipid. According to calculation done by using these values, total dioxin intake amount for a person with 70 kg in weight was 4.92 pg TEQ/ kg from these analyzed compounds when it is consumed 25 gr daily as butter.

In conclusion, it was found that the daily intake amounts of dioxins and dioxin like compounds was higher than 1-4 pg TEQ/kg given by World Health Organization (WHO). Thus, it is possible to observe serious health risks, as cancer which is depend to consumption of butter in Elazig region.
