In this study, it was purposed to determine the incidence of intestinal parasites among children in Harput Nursery School and Harput Orphanage, and to evaluate the epidemiological factors effecting prevalence of intestinal parasite, and to compare with studies that performed in previous years, and to give information for contamination routes and protection of intestinal parasite infections.

Twenty seven children from Harput Nursery School aged between 7 to 13 and sixty one from Harput Orphanage aged between 12 to 19 were participated in our study. Stool samples obtained using a closed container, and anal band samples were taken from each student and immediately examined by native, stained lugol and Trichrome stain. In this study, information with regard to the protection from parasites and contamination routes of parasites were explained to the children who had contamination with intestinal parasites.

In this study, one or more intestinal parasites were observed in 33 children (37.5%). Giardia intestinalis (15.9%) and Enterobius vermicularis (%13.6) are the most observed parasites, respectively. We did not find any correlation between institution, age groups and gender and parasite incidence. But the intestinal parasite incidence was significantly higher in among primary school children compared to high school children (p=0.033).

We have observed increased prevalence of intestinal parasite in children in Harput Nursery School and Harput Orphanage. It was found that the incidence of detection of intestinal parasites decreased compared to previous studies performed in same schools, however this health problem is still affecting this subgroup, thus there will be need to repeat health surveys and educational courses.
