Glycoproteins exist in various organisms varying from bacteria to human, and they have many described functions. These proteins which have short oligosaccharides and serve in so many cellular events as cell surface recognition by hormones, viruses and other substances. They also serve as cell surface antigens, outer cell matriks element, mucine secretion of gastrointestinale and urogenitale tracts. Furthermore, almost all globuler proteins in plasma, except albumin, secreted enzymes and proteins are show glycoprotein structure. In this review, we have given information about structure, function and the biological significance of the glycoproteins and the main methods used in the examination of glycoproteins. The availability of glycoproteins in clinical treatments, and their significance in cancer were also highlighted.
