Effects of breeding systems and age on egg quality characteristics of Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)

This research has been performed to determine the effects of different breeding systems and age on the egg quality characteristics in pheasants.

For this purpose, pheasants have been housed in free system as on the ground; in mating cage and in group cage. The study took 126 days which included the age period of weeks as 36-40, 41- 44, 45-48, and 49-53.

In the eggs obtained from the free system, from the mating cage and from the group cage; egg weight values was determined as follows; 29.34-32.63 g, 29.80-32.99 g and 28.67-31.85 g (P<0.05, P<0.01), shell weight; 2.18-2.45 g, 2.96-3.37 g and 2.45-2.86 g (P<0.01, P<0.001), shell thickness; 0.222-2.200 mm, 0.288-0.230 mm and 0.264-0.215 mm (P<0.001), shape index; %80.51-77.46, %81.46-78.89 and %80.28-77.91 (P<0.01), yolk weight; 9.44-11.09 g, 9.16-10.50 g and 9.25-10.01 g (P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001), albumin weight; 16.06-18.94 g, 14.82-17.36 g and 15.19-18.18 g (P<0.01, P<0.001), yolk index; %49.53-42.44, %48.23-40.87 and %46.42-40.80 (P<0.05), albumin index; %1.23-1.68, %1.55-1.84 and %1.45-1.75 (P<0.001) and Haugh unit 80.60-77.70, 82.23-80.60 and 81.25-78.55 (P<0.01), respectively.

In all groups, egg weight, albumin index, covering weight yolk and albumin weights values increased by age (P<0.01, P<0.001) while shell weight, haugh unite, yolk index values decreased (P<0.001).
