Objective: We retrospectively evaluated perioperative features of patients with acute upper extremity arterial occlusions and the results of the performed surgical treatment on these patients.

Materials and Methods: The study included 48 patients (32 male, 16 female) who were admitted with acute upper extremity arterial occlusion between January 1994 – March 2014. The patients were divided into two groups according to the time period between the intervention and the appearance of symptoms. Amputation and mortality rates were evaluated in the Group 1 and Group 2 which included patients treated within the first 12 hours and after 12 hours respectively.

Results: 20 patients (%42) presented within the first 12 hours and 28 patients (%58) presented with a delay of more than 12 hours. The most frequent localization of thromboembolism was the proximal part of brachial artery (%48), and atrial fibrilation was the most common cause (%56). Amputation rates were %5 and %7, and mortality rates were %10 and %14 in Group I and II respectively.

Conclusion: The time loss by performing the imaging techniques to confirm the diagnosis of upper extremity acute arterial occlusions must be considered and immediate surgery for these patients can reduce mortality and morbidity rates.
