Keywords: Calf, diarrhea, vitamin A, β-carotene

Aim of the present study was to determine levels of β-carotene and vitamin A of blood sera and liver tissues, and evaluate relationship between β-carotene and vitamin A levels in blood sera and liver tissues of healthy and diarrheic calves. A total number of 60 calves aged 3-28 days (20 healthy calves and 40 diarrheic neonatal calves) were used in the study. All calves were systematically and clinically examined and liver tissues and blood samples were obtained from animals for laboratory analysis. The differences of vitamin A and β- carotene values of liver tissues and blood sera were significant in diarrheic calves compared with healthy calves (p<0.001). However, there were positive correlations between vitamin A and β-carotene levels in liver tissue (p<0.01) and blood serum (p<0.05) of diarrheic and healthy calves.

As a result, determination of the blood level of vitamin A and β-carotene gives an opinion of body vitamin A and β-carotene levels of neonatal calves. Vitamin A and β-carotene levels in liver tissue and blood serum of diarrheic calves showed that vitamin A injections might be useful in diarrheic calves.
