Thyroidectomy for Completion- Recurrent Goiter and Complications

Objective: Approximately 10-15 % of patients require rethyroidectomy after their first operations. In this study we analyze the results of patients undergone thyroidectomy for recurrent goiter and completion of malignancy.

Material and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the the data of patients to study the incidence of complications after reoperative throid surgery.

Results: Sixty six patient were operated for recurrence and completion for malignancy. Fifty six patients were female 10 were male. Sixteen patients were operated for malignancy. Total thyroidectomy was the operation of choise. In seven patients transient hypocalcemia and one permanent hypoparathyroidism were recorded. There was no permanent laryngeal nerve damage observed .

Conclusion: Although reoperative surgery is uncommon and harder than the first surgery it can be performed safely with little morbidity to the patient.
