Keywords: Babesia ovis, sheep and goats

This study was carried out on 239 small ruminats which composed 192 sheep and 47 goats to detect Babesia species and their prevalence between May 1998 and September 2000 around Kayseri. During this period a total of 478 peripheral blood smears were prepared from the animals. At the same time, the animals were examined for tick infestation and the present ticks were collected. The blood smears were stained with 5 % Giemsa’s stain solution and then examined under the microscope with oil objective. The collected ticks were identifed under the stereo microscope. Some of the adult ticks were dissected to prepare smear slides to investigate sporokinets of Babesia species. For this purpose the prepared ticks smears were stained with Gieamsa’s stain solution described above then examined under the microscope with oil objective.

Thirty four (17.70%) of the 192 sheep, 3 (6.38%) of the 47 goats and totally 37 (15.48%) of the 239 small ruminats were found infected with Babesia ovis naturally. No Babesia motasi was seen in the animals. None of the infected animals showed clinical reactions of babesiosis. The collected ticks were identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus, R.bursa, R.turanicus, Dermacentor niveus, Hyalomma marginatum and Haemophysalis sulcata No sporokinets of Babesia were detected in the smears.
