The aim of this study was to compare the effects of silk thread, octyl-cyanoacrylate and fibrin adhesives on healing of incisional wound. Thirty-six female Wistar albino rats were used in the study. The rats were randomly divided into 3 main groups (n=12). Under general anesthesia, 3 cm long longitudinal wounds were formed on the back of the rats, on the two sides of the lumbar vertebrae. The same procedure was performed in all rats and a total of 72 incisional skin wounds were obtained. The skin incisions in the rats in the first group were closed with a simple interrupted suture with 3/0 silk thread. The skin incisions in the second group of rats were closed with fibrin glue (FA) and the skin incisions in the third group were closed with octyl-cyanoacrylate (OCA). On the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st days after the operation, 3 rats from each group were euthanized and skin samples (6 pieces of each group) were taken from the wound areas including intact skin sections. Skin samples were divided into two parts, one part was used for histological examinations and the other part was used to measure wound tension resistance. The data obtained from the measurements of wound breaking strength showed that a significant increase in FA group only on day 7 (P<0.01). Histological findings showed that the best result in healing of incisional wounds was obtained in OCA treated group. As a result, OCA tissue glue can be used safely in closure of incisional skin wounds.
