Since skull is the most suitable region for standardization among all parts of the body, it is commonly used for species identification. This study was conducted to determine the osteometric properties of the skull in Awassi sheep. In the study, thirty adult (15 male and 15 female) Awassi sheep (Ovis aries) were used. On the skull samples, 39 linear craniometric measurements were performed. The skull index values were calculated based on these craniometric data. All data were expressed as mean ± SD. In the morphometric examination, total length of the skull, neurocranium length and facial length was calculated as 241.30±14.01 mm, 138.96±5.91 mm and 164.69±16.92 mm, respectively. Skull index, index of foramen magnum, facial index and nasal index values were measured as 44.77±3.23, 97.32±16.28, 45.57±3.80 and 30.99±6.10, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between females and males in cranial and orbital index values (P˂0.05). We suggest that the results of this study would provide baseline data that can be used in typologic investigation within and between the species.
