Effect of Dietary Beta-1,3 / 1,6-Glucan on Performance and Egg Quality Traits in Laying Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) Exposed to Lead

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementation of beta-glucan to the basal diet of laying quails exposed to lead (Pb) toxicity. Totally 112 Japanese quails (5 weeks old) were randomly divided into 4 groups of 28 chicks, with similar initial average body weight, in 4 replicates of 7 quails each. The first group was fed basal ration, which has based corn-soybean and no supplement (Control). 100 mg/kg lead (as Pb (II) acetate trihydrate) to ration of the second group was supplemented (Pb). It was supplemented to 100 mg/kg beta-glucan to the ration of third group (Beta-glucan). The last group was fed basal ration plus 100 mg/kg lead and 100 mg/kg beta-glucan (Pb+Beta-glucan). At the end of the experiment, it was observed that the body weights of the groups were similar. While the effect of beta-glucan on egg weight was not significant except for 43-56. days (P<0.05), egg production (excluding 29-56. days) was found to be very significant (P<0.001). The feed intake (P<0.01) and feed conversion ratio (P<0.001) of the beta-glucan supplemented groups were similar to the control group on 1-56 days. In terms of egg quality parameters; egg yolk index (P<0.01) haugh unit and albumin index (P<0.001) were negatively affected by lead, beta-glucan addition significantly improved the yellow index. As a result, the supplementation of beta-glucan to ration improved egg quality parameters and egg performance of laying quails exposed to lead toxicity.
